Onion is such a great vegetable with a lot of nutrients, but Chinese cooking doesn’t use onion as much as other vegetables. When I was living in the Netherlands, I came up with this recipe – Sweet and Sour Onion. It is so easy to make, and can be a great side dish for a meal. After I moved back to China, I introduced this dish to my parents, who rarely bought onions at all, they loved it!
Sweet and Sour Onion
2-3 medium size onions
3 tbsp vinegar
1 tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
- Cut the onions into thin shreds.
- Heat up a wok with 2 tbsp of cooking oil over strong heat, when the oil is hot, put the onion in to stir-fry for 1 minute. When the onion shreds are soften, add 3 tbsp of vinegar, stir for another minute. Add 1 tbsp of sugar, mix well. Keep stirring for about 3 minutes, add 1/2 tsp of salt, mix well. Take out and it’s ready to serve.
